The Origins of Coffee
Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. According to legend, it was first discovered in Ethiopia by a goat herder named Kaldi, who noticed his flock became unusually energetic after eating red berries from a certain bush. Intrigued, he tried them himself and experienced a surge of energy.
By the 15th century, coffee had reached the Middle East, with Sufi monks in Yemen using it to stay awake during nighttime devotions. The beans were heavily guarded, and the export of fertile coffee plants was strictly prohibited.
It wasn't until the 17th century that coffee made its way to Europe, where it quickly became a sensation. The first European coffeehouse opened in Venice in 1645, sparking a cultural revolution that eventually led to the modern café culture we know today.
